Innovation and Collaboration in Engineering: How UoWM labs foster transdisciplinary skills development

The SEED transnational meeting, organized by CluBE as the lead partner and hosted by the University of Western Macedonia (UoWM), a project partner, took place in Kozani from February 20-22. This gathering featured two significant study visits on campus (20th February), showcasing UoWM’s commitment to fostering innovation and collaboration in the realms of engineering and technology.

The first visit introduced participants to the “Perseus Racing” team, UoWM’s esteemed entry in the Formula Student competition, under the guidance of Assc. Prof. S. Douvartzides. The consortium members were not only spectators but also got hands-on experience on the formula car themselves. The presentation by the student team shed light on the intricate design and engineering behind their vehicle, exemplifying the power of teamwork and student innovation.

Following this, the group moved on to the BCM lab, established by Official State Bulletin FEK 3904 on October 25, 2019, and spearheaded by Assoc. Prof. A. Tsouknidas. The BCM (Biomaterials and Computational Mechanics) lab, with its divisions focusing on -Bio- and Nano-materials, Additive Manufacturing, and Computational Mechanics – demonstrates UoWM’s leadership in pushing the frontiers of research in biomaterials and computational mechanics. The visit illustrated the collaborative efforts of the lab’s interdisciplinary teams in advancing their fields, highlighting the university’s role in nurturing a vibrant community of innovators.

These study visits during the SEED transnational meeting—meticulously organized by CluBE and hosted at UoWM—underscored the dynamic, innovative spirit thriving at the university. Through initiatives like the Perseus Racing team and the BCM lab’s research endeavors, UoWM is not just teaching engineering and technology; it’s actively shaping the future of these fields through practical engagement and groundbreaking research.
